Yes, Bayfield has had its share of cold temperatures in recent days, however along with it we’ve received about 18+ inches of new snow – beautiful, white, sparkling snow. So what better time to think about some XC Skiing. For those who aren’t aware of our location, Pinehurst Inn is located about 1.5 miles from Mt. Ashwabay Ski & Recreation Area.
The Mt. Ashwabay/Jerry Jolly Cross-Country trail system covers 40 km of classic and skate trails with ratings from beginner to expert. All trails inspected daily and are groomed and tracked as needed. The beginner’s trail is the picturesque Sugar Bush Trail. Intermediate terrain can be enjoyed on Anchor, Seagull and Raven trails. Advanced skiers can venture out on the longer 15 km loop, which combines Sugar Bush, Deer Path and Raven trails, returning to the Mt. Ashwabay chalet.

Admire over 54,000 blooming daffodils, a vibrant mosaic of roadside lupine, and rolling orchards of apple blossoms bursting into rosy color during Bayfield’s month-long celebration of Spring, the 9th Annual Bayfield in Bloom. This is truly one of our favorite times of year here at Pinehurst. The colors of the gardens throughout our grounds and the community are truly breathtaking. There are many different activities happening:
- Friday, May 13th – Live Broadcast of WI Public Radio’s “Garden Talk” with Larry Meiller, Bayfield Lakeside Pavilion, 11:000am – 12:30pm. Free Admission
- Saturday, May 21st – Apple Blossom Run, a fundraiser for the Bayfield Carnegie Library. 9:00am, 2 mile fun run, 10K walk & 10K run.
- Sunday, June 12th – Blessing of the Fleet, Bayfield City Harbor, 1:00pm, An ecumenical service & ceremony celebrating the rich nautical heritage of Bayfield.

Bayfield and the Chequamegon Bay offer terrific opportunities for biking – whether exploring the Moqua Barrens, roaming Bayfield orchards, or taking the ferry to bike on Madeline Island, we can find trails appropriate for your biking expertise. Pinehurst is pleased to partner with Bayfield Bike Route for this two day package.
There are hundreds of paved miles of small county roads winding throughout the fruit and farming areas and the public forests. Madeline Island, (the only developed island) is crisscrossed by miles of designated self-propelled lanes. Within the vast county and federal forests inland, meander thousands of dirt logging roads, trails and fire lanes. On Mount Ashwabay recreation area, three miles south of the city of Bayfield, the off road cyclist finds twenty miles of marked ski trails open for cycling during the summer.
