Pinehurst Inn Guests Make New Adventures with Dreamcatcher Sailing

May 31st, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

Pinehurst Inn guest reservations for the summer are coming in strong with numerous Pinehurst Dreamcatcher Sailing Packages included. Bayfield and the Apostle Islands offer numerous opportunities for on-the-water adventure and the ability to create packages just enhances the whole experience.

If you’ve never experienced sailing, this is an ideal place to give it a try. Dreamcatcher Sailing offers a simply entry into sailing with their Afternoon Sail, a 2 – 1/4 hour excursion leaving at 2:30 in the afternoon. Looking for something more? Try their Island Landing Excursion is a 4 1/2 hour sail providing more time to get out and explore the Islands. Their Sea Caves by Sail trip departs from Cornucopia and is a wonderful way to explore the spectacular mainland caves. So many choices.

No matter what trip you select, we are confident that this mode of water “travel” will take you into a state of euphoria. Sailing is an art. It is done in relative silence, with some water sounds in the background. Captains willing to teach you what you want to learn, taking you into some of the most breathtaking scenes you can imagine.

Can you picture it? Let us help with this Life to the Max video.

It’s a safe bet that you will end this experience with a smile on your face.

Riding through a field of diamonds… on Lake Superior of course!

May 10th, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

(Written by Kristen Sandstrom)

It’s been a while since we’ve talked about “the ferry.” It’s no secret that our family has been riding the Madeline Island Ferry for many many years now. Of course, Nancy remembers riding the original Nichevo which you had to back off of! I personally remember riding on the Nichevo II as a child, but to this day I have a soft spot for the Island Queen. The Queen has this little deck off of their passenger cabin that can only seat about 5-6 people comfortably. My sister and I would always race up there – to “our spot.” I still to this very day, love sitting there. It’s as if we have our own private balcony for that 25 minute ride.

lake superior bayfield photoToday is one of those days that I’d really rather be riding the Ferry. From Bayfield the lake looks like a field of diamonds with all of those sparkles. It’s virtually impossible to capture those diamonds in a photo, but trust me, they’re there. I see this lake everyday, yet days like today make me feel so very fortunate that I live here. It makes me want to be a “visitor” again. I want to go down and hop on the next Ferry scheduled. I would start by staying on the main deck of the boat. I would lean over the edge to see the bow of the boat breaking through the calm waters – creating its beautiful wake. If I’m lucky enough to be riding on the Island Queen, I would run up to “our spot” and sit and enjoy the cold (and it is cold at this time of year) wind on my face. From the boat you can see a few of the Apostle Islands: Basswood Island, Long Island, Ashland and more. Look at a map and try to identify which is which.

So, yes, the Ferry is for many simply a mode of transportation – a way of getting from the mainland to Madeline Island, and back. No matter how many times I ride those boats though, it’s more than that for me. It’s a short and sweet adventure. It’s 25 minutes where I can just sit and enjoy the view! Which is something we all could do a bit more of.

Pinehurst Inn, Bayfield – Opportunity for Adventure and Relaxation No Matter the Weather

March 14th, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

Conditions here in Bayfield, WI are a bit schizophrenic …. a few weeks ago Pinehurst Inn guests were enjoying terrific XC ski conditions (and returning to Pinehurst Inn for a sauna!). Last weekend we had guests jostling between rain and sun and still getting out to have fun on wet trails (returning to Pinehurst Inn for a sauna!). This weekend we’re intending to tell our guests to bring their hiking boots (and look forward to a wonderful Pinehurst Inn sauna!).

Yes, it’s unusually warm everywhere in the Midwest right now. The temps are in the high 60′s. I just returned from town where I ran into one of our favorite kayak dealers in town – he was loading kayak and gear into his car, heading out for his first 2012 paddle! This isn’t something we recommend to our guests in March! There are chunks of ice floating all around the bay – and yes, the water is cold!

We’re all enjoying it tremendously, but I know I am also a bit on edge. Either we have one more major snow storm brewing in the future or this is global warming. Either way, the sun feels glorious. Much of the ice is off the lake and we’re seeing sparkling blue water.

So what’s the point? If relaxation and outdoor adventure is the goal, Pinehurst Inn and Bayfield can be an ideal destination, no matter what the weather! Hiking? It’s wonderful in the spring. Biking – right now it would be amazing. Snowshoeing – there are still some places you will find snow. Sitting on a beach – yup, we can point you in the right direction. And no matter what you choose to do to provide adventure, you can come back to your accomodations at Pinehurst Inn and truly relax.

Let us help you create your style of adventure!

Pinehurst and Wolfsong Adventures – Nice Attention

December 7th, 2010 by Nancy Sandstrom

We were pleased a few days ago to get an email from a freelance travel writer, Jeanette Hurt, who shared an article on Third Coast Digest featuring both Wolfsong Adventures and Pinehurst Inn. Jeanette and her husband visited Bayfield and Pinehurst last winter.

This article provides a great overview of a day of dog sledding – getting to know the dogs, learning to harness, learning to drive your own team, and more. And to finish your day back at Pinehurst Inn with a whirlpool or sauna (or both!) – what more could you ask for!

So if you’ve considered the Pinehurst Inn Dog Sledding Package, this piece may just convince you to act! We look forward to helping set the stage for a great winter adventure (along with just a bit of relaxation).

Remember that you can book online or call 877-499-7651.
