One of the most common questions that we hear – not only from guests – but all over the place is, “What is there to do in Bayfield? Why do people come?” This is one of the easiest and most difficult questions to answer. We like to think that Bayfield has really mastered the “art of doing nothing.” But, this thought tends to scare people who in today’s world are constantly being entertained. Here are the things that Bayfield does not (and hopefully never will) have: an amusement park, water park (unless you count the lake!), fast food restaurants, and chain hotels/motels. There are many things that Bayfield is not. What are we then? We would like to consider Bayfield as a place of relaxation and respite. There are a myriad of activities for you, don’t get us wrong. Better yet, there are a variety of things you can do that won’t cost you a penny! Last month we gave you a list of things to do in Bayfield that have a cost to them – this month here’s Bayfield “on the cheap!”

Meyers Beach Hiking Trail – As a part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, this trail offers a good workout hiking trail that takes you up above the Lake Superior sea caves and gives you fabulous views of some of the Apostle Islands.

Visit the Orchards & Berry Farms – During the summer months you can pick your own cherries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, juneberries, blackberries – just about any berry you can think of! Or, if you prefer, you can visit the stand to pick up a bag or basket of fresh fruit already picked for you, along with jars of jams, jellies and fresh preserves.

Swimming! – There is nothing quite like the sensation of swimming through the clean, crisp, beautiful waters of Lake Superior. Lake Superior offers beautiful sandy beaches for all swimmers including youngsters who love to play in the sand with delicate white sand for the best of sand castle building. And what could be better than a Lake Superior sandy beach to relax on after an invigorating swim.

Explore the Arts – Bayfield’s many art galleries and studios invite visitors to see first hand the quality work created by local painters, potters, woodworkers, weavers and metalsmiths and more. Noted as one of the best 100 artist towns in the U.S., the numerous studios and galleries have something for everyone’s taste.

Of course this is only a sampling of things you can do in Bayfield at no (or next to no) cost! One of our favorite pastimes is finding a quiet little corner somewhere – indoor or out – where one can curl up with a good book, listen to the sounds of the world around them and simply relax!

Well, the sever weather alerts started as early as yesterday afternoon for up to 18″ of snow through the day and into the evening tonight. It has started out slowly, but the northeast winds have started to kick in and the temps are dropping. Does this sound miserable or what?

Not to us! The energy around Bayfield today is so exciting! We are anxiously awaiting Santa’s arrival on the Ferry Boat. Yes, Santa arrive via water in these parts. The site of all of these children waving to Santa as the boat arrives in Bayfield is wonderful! Of course, with the snow today it might be a bit more dramatic (especially for Santa & Mrs. Claus) as they ride through those northeastern waves. This is just one of the events that happens in Bayfield that makes living in a small community like this so wonderful!

Once the children have all told Santa their holiday wishes and consumed their cookies and hot chocolate, many of us will simply head home to curl up on the sofa, snuggle up under a blanket and read a good book. Not us though, we’re going to head to our neighbor community, Washburn, for the arts & crafts boutiques. The maybe after that we’ll enjoy the local production of “A Christmas Carol” at Stagenorth. There is always something to do around here!

We really do encourage all of our friends, guests and family to visit us during these quieter months. There is plenty to do, and at this time of year you experience a completely different beauty. Of course, you see the beauty of the lake, the snow, the woods and more, but you also see the beauty of our community and how much we all appreciate each other.

The Bayfield, Wisconsin area is well known for the local artisans – this has become a great destination for creative souls seeking a place that fosters creativity. Potters, painters, writers, weavers and more live and work throughout this area.

This past week marked a very special anniversary for a long standing pottery studio in Bayfield: Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery, located just south of Bayfield, celebrated their 50th year in business. This studio is marked by the large, ceramic pot standing in the yard of the gallery.

The studio and gallery were started by Bob Eckels, a trained painter and sculptor who dedicated himself to ceramics. Bob was hired in the 1950’s as an art professor at Northland College in Ashland, to start the art department that continues today.

Today Eckels continues to offer magnificent pottery along with a wide variety work from local and national artists. Deanna Eckels, a re-nouned potter in her own right, operates the studio today with her husband, Peter Skoro. This landmark studio is one that frequent visitors to Bayfield are sure to visit.

Eckels is just one of many great studios in Bayfield. Just one more reason Bayfield is such a great destination.
