Herb gardens begin as Spring blooms in Bayfield!

May 29th, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

silver sage farm and flowers image Yesterday Kristen and I took a trip to Silver Sage Farm to purchase herbs for the Pinehurst Inn gardens. This beautiful farm is located in Port Wing, WI, about 30 minutes from Bayfield. While it is a bit of a trek, it is completely worth it. Owner, Mary Pearson, has her own little piece of paradise. Upon arrival the first thing we noticed was the amazing gardens right outside of Mary’s home. Wine grapes, lettuces, flowers and so much more! The bees and butterflies were very very happy.

This is one of the things about living up here that is hard to explain to those who have been acclimated to the city to the extent that they buy their herbs at the grocery store or a discount store. There is something so much fun about going to the actual farm and talking to the gardener about their plants. They really do treat them like a family. Calling plants sad because they haven’t been transplanted yet. Mary was eager to tour me through her garden to share the different varieties of herbs she has.

Mary was a wealth of information and was able to suggest a few different varieties of peppers that will do better in our region. The smells were amazing and we simply can’t wait to get these in the ground so they can flourish and be added to you breakfast when you come to visit us.

Now we just need mother nature to cooperate a bit more and give us the time to get these beautiful plants in the ground before the next thunderstorms roll in.

Finally, one of our favorite parts about visiting Silver Sage Farm that we weren’t expecting were her gorgeous horses greeting us! We couldn’t help but take a few photos!

Apple Blossoms

Pinehurst Inn loves this time of year in Bayfield, a community that celebrates spring. Bayfield in Bloom is just one way we recognize the arrival of spring and pending summer.

What does Bayfield in Bloom offer for our guests?

  • Enjoy the opening of this month long promotion with live broadcast of WPR’s Larry Meiller’s “Garen Talk” show from the Bayfield Pavilion on Friday, May 13th from 11am – 12:30pm. While you’re there, enjoy the numerous vendors providing books, plants, information and education on all topics green.
  • Explore Bayfield’s best gardens at the June 4th Garden Tours. Or take your own self-guided tour.
  • Head up to Hauser’s Superior View Farm – this wonderful local farm has been growing field grown perennials for years. What a treat to head into their barn and be able to pick from freshly dug perennials. Plus there’s a amazing views!
  • Bike or drive the Bayfield orchards bursting with Apple Blossoms.

For us at Pinehurst Inn, the gardens are clearly calling us. Yes, we too have daffodils beginning to bloom – but more than that. This property has over 100 years of “growing history”. For many years in the early 1900s the fields to the south were filled with strawberries. And even then, the perennials were being grown within the stone pathed garden. During our ownership we’ve expanded those perennials and they merge with the native gardens surrounding the Garden House. And as we’ve expanded these areas, we’ve added in numerous herbs, and other edibles that enhance our breakfasts. Then of course there is Steve’s ever expanding vegetable garden.

To add to the celebration, Pinehurst Inn is pleased to offer a wonderful Bayfield in Bloom midweek discount!

Whether you have a green thumb or just enjoy the beauty, join us for Bayfield in Bloom. Here’s the bayfield-in-bloom-schedule.

Pinehurst Inn Guests Enjoy Spring Blossoms

June 2nd, 2010 by Nancy Sandstrom

Spring in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands is normally a beautiful time of year, but this year is even better! The early, warmer Spring has brought blossoms out about three weeks early and Pinehurst Inn guests have been out and about enjoying the beautiful blossoms.

The lilacs are in full bloom at Pinehurst Inn- ah, the smell of lilacs is incredible. We are just starting to see the iris and oriental poppies – flowering plants that have been in Pinehurst gardens for over 50 years. The lupines are just beginning their blooms, something to behold as you drive along Highway 13 adorned with the purples, lavenders, and other shades of beautiful spiked flowers. Then there are the apple blossoms, the wonderful reminders of all the fruit to be enjoyed during this summer and fall harvest season.

Our guests have been enjoying these spring blossoms and more. Whether wandering our gardens, laying in the hammock simply relaxing or biking the Bayfield Orchards, the setting brings a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation.

If you have a green thumb (or even if you don’t!) remember that the Bayfield in Bloom Garden Tours are this Saturday, June 5th from 10am – 3pm. This self guided Garden Tour takes you to some of the most beautiful gardens in Bayfield.

We always think of this incredible garden mecca as the icing on the cake to Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands, and the quaint community of Bayfield. Enjoy!
