Bayfield in Bloom – A Celebration of Spring in the Home of the Apostle Islands

May 27th, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

Anyone who has visited Pinehurst Inn is aware of our dedication to gardening. Perennial flower gardens, vegetable gardens, herbs, and native garden take up a fair amount of our time. It’s a good thing. But we are certainly not alone!

Were you aware that Bayfield offers some of the most magnificent gardens and orchards in the state? The proximity to Lake Superior and varying elevations provide something of a micro climate. What results is a superb growing climate. Result? Beautiful gardens, hanging baskets, orchards, and more. Celebrate spring gardens with Bayfield in Bloom and the Bayfield Garden Tours.

Bayfield’s Annual Garden Tour is Saturday, June 2nd and Sunday, June 3rd from 10:00am to 3:00pm. On Saturday, visitors will have the opportunity visit nine of Bayfield’s finest city gardens, with opportunity to chat with gardeners, share ideas. Map includes self-guided walking tours of gardens in and around Bayfield. Sunday’s event is a driving tour, with over eighteen Bayfield area gardens compiled on one map for a relaxing afternoon car ride.

Of course, Bayfield in Bloom offers additional activities between now and June 10th. Just a few…

Check out the complete bayfield-in-bloom-schedule and the bayfield-in-bloom-schedule.

And know that the Pinehurst Inn gardens are always available for wandering, enjoying — and we will even let you do a bit of weeding! And of course, don’t forget our Bayfield in Bloom Special lodging offer!

Pinehurst Celebrates World Kitchen Garden Day!

August 22nd, 2010 by Nancy Sandstrom

The gardens are lush this year. And the produce baskets are overflowing. Yes, zuchinni, carrots, greens, beets (ah, beet greens!), peppers, and more. So the idea of World Kitchen Garden Day really struck us – a wonderful way to celebrate this time of year when we are blessed with this fantastic array of food.

World Kitchen Garden Day is an opportunity to
celebrate the multiple pleasures and benefits of home-grown, locally grown foods.

  • celebrate the positive role of organic kitchen gardening (good health, good community, and it taste’s so good!)
  • To raise awareness about the benefits of eating local and to encourage people to explore local food options in their areas
  • To build community spirit, at local and international levels, around the universal experiences of gardening, cooking, and eating (think Farmers Markets, community gardens, and more)

The concepts and ideas of this “celebration” are so important – and should be considered every day of the year. But today, look around your own community and get to know your local farmers and growers.

Bayfield blueberriesAt Pinehurst Inn in Bayfield, we are thrilled to build our breakfast using not only our own produce, but numerous delicious veggies and fruits from our area orchards and farms. This morning we serve our very popular Pinehurst Blueberry Oven French Toast (using wonderful blueberries from Highland Valley Farm in Bayfield). And tomorrow we will be doing something wonderful with those fresh beet greens – stay tuned! We might even share another recipe.

Happy harvesting!

Pinehurst Inn Guests Enjoy Spring Blossoms

June 2nd, 2010 by Nancy Sandstrom

Spring in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands is normally a beautiful time of year, but this year is even better! The early, warmer Spring has brought blossoms out about three weeks early and Pinehurst Inn guests have been out and about enjoying the beautiful blossoms.

The lilacs are in full bloom at Pinehurst Inn- ah, the smell of lilacs is incredible. We are just starting to see the iris and oriental poppies – flowering plants that have been in Pinehurst gardens for over 50 years. The lupines are just beginning their blooms, something to behold as you drive along Highway 13 adorned with the purples, lavenders, and other shades of beautiful spiked flowers. Then there are the apple blossoms, the wonderful reminders of all the fruit to be enjoyed during this summer and fall harvest season.

Our guests have been enjoying these spring blossoms and more. Whether wandering our gardens, laying in the hammock simply relaxing or biking the Bayfield Orchards, the setting brings a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation.

If you have a green thumb (or even if you don’t!) remember that the Bayfield in Bloom Garden Tours are this Saturday, June 5th from 10am – 3pm. This self guided Garden Tour takes you to some of the most beautiful gardens in Bayfield.

We always think of this incredible garden mecca as the icing on the cake to Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands, and the quaint community of Bayfield. Enjoy!
