The gardens are lush this year. And the produce baskets are overflowing. Yes, zuchinni, carrots, greens, beets (ah, beet greens!), peppers, and more. So the idea of World Kitchen Garden Day really struck us – a wonderful way to celebrate this time of year when we are blessed with this fantastic array of food.

World Kitchen Garden Day is an opportunity to
celebrate the multiple pleasures and benefits of home-grown, locally grown foods.

• celebrate the positive role of organic kitchen gardening (good health, good community, and it taste’s so good!)
• To raise awareness about the benefits of eating local and to encourage people to explore local food options in their areas
• To build community spirit, at local and international levels, around the universal experiences of gardening, cooking, and eating (think Farmers Markets, community gardens, and more)

The concepts and ideas of this “celebration” are so important – and should be considered every day of the year. But today, look around your own community and get to know your local farmers and growers.

At Pinehurst Inn in Bayfield, we are thrilled to build our breakfast using not only our own produce, but numerous delicious veggies and fruits from our area orchards and farms. This morning we serve our very popular Pinehurst Blueberry Oven French Toast (using wonderful blueberries from Highland Valley Farm in Bayfield). And tomorrow we will be doing something wonderful with those fresh beet greens – stay tuned! We might even share another recipe.

The lilacs are in full bloom at Pinehurst Inn- ah, the smell of lilacs is incredible. We are just starting to see the iris and oriental poppies – flowering plants that have been in Pinehurst gardens for over 50 years. The lupines are just beginning their blooms, something to behold as you drive along Highway 13 adorned with the purples, lavenders, and other shades of beautiful spiked flowers. Then there are the apple blossoms, the wonderful reminders of all the fruit to be enjoyed during this summer and fall harvest season.

Our guests have been enjoying these spring blossoms and more. Whether wandering our gardens, laying in the hammock simply relaxing or biking the Bayfield Orchards, the setting brings a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation.

If you have a green thumb (or even if you don’t!) remember that the Bayfield in Bloom Garden Tours are this Saturday, June 5th from 10am – 3pm.  This self guided Garden Tour takes you to some of the most beautiful gardens in Bayfield.

We always think of this incredible garden mecca as the icing on the cake to Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands, and the quaint community of Bayfield. Enjoy!

The month long celebration of spring in the Bayfield and Apostle Island area kicked off this past Friday. The annual event started with Wisconsin Public Radio host Larry Meiller and crew broadcasting their show from the Bayfield Pavilion.

Bayfield has become a gardening destination – particularly with our beautiful orchards set high above Bayfield (ah, the apple blossom should be at their peak within the week), magnificent daffodils greeting our visitors around town, and our area resident gardens. The growing community is strong, vibrant and connected.

So what else is offered with Bayfield in Bloom?

• Saturday, May 22 – annual Apple Blossom Run – 2 mile fun run & 10K walk/run that travels through the beautiful orchard area
• Saturday, June 5th – annual Garden Tour – see some of the best!
• Sunday, June 13th – annual Blessing of the Fleet, the annual ecumenical blessing of water vessels of all kind.
