Pinehurst Inn and Enso Day Spa Create Great Guest Experience

February 27th, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

The partnership between Bayfield’s Pinehurst Inn and Enso Wellness Center and Day Spa create a lodging experience to be remembered. Pinehurst Inn is known for attention to the guest experience, focusing on adventure, environment and personal rejuvenation. Enso Day Spa offers the personal rejuvenation within the context of environmental sensitivity. It all sounds well and good – right? But what does this really mean?

What makes spa services being available at Pinehurst Inn good for our guests?

  • Enjoy your eco-elegant Bayfield accomodations, while being able to easily wander down the steps right into the Enso experience – no car, no searching for the location. Seamless.
  • Know that the services offered will enhance the sense of relaxation the whole Pinehurst Inn property offers
  • The other amenities within Pinehurst Inn are a perfect combination for spa services, such as the Pinehurst Inn sauna (if you’ve ever had a massage following a sauna, you understand!)
  • The Naturopathica products used by Enso Day Spa fit into the overall parameters used throughout the property – eco-certified, well tested and great for the skin. But best of all, they feel heavenly.

Of course, we are biased. Darcy and Michael, the owners of Enso Day Spa, are our daughter and son-in-law. They operate a first class business and understand how all our services and accomodations compliment each other.

A very cool partnership. A very cool way for our guests to be able to get the full lodging / spa destination experience.

Bayfield Winter Festival

The first weekend in March (Friday, March 2 – Sunday, March 4) offers a unique opportunity to reduce your cabin fever. Bayfield Winter Festival provides a series of activities organized for the benefit of the Bayfield Recreation Center and Mt. Ashwaybay Ski and Recreation Area. Some highlights of the weekend:

Join the Bayfield Regional Conservancy at Big Water Cafe & Coffee Roasters at 6:30pm for hot drinks and treats. Around 7:00pm, the group will head over to the Brownstone Trail for a magical walk amongst hundreds of luminary’s set along the popular hiking trail.
  • Bayfield’s First Friday

Better late than never?

February 18th, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

As we all know it’s been a bit of a non-Winter. There hasn’t been much snow, and I think there may have been more days above freezing than not in January. That said, here in Bayfield, February has been panning out to be much better! There was just enough snow for  very successful Apostle Island Sled Dog Races, and tonight is the Annual Book Across the Bay, a 5 mile XC Ski race across the bay between Ashand and Washburn.  It’s rumored that up to 4000 participants will be at this year’s “book.” This is an event that raises funds for grants for programs that encourage physical and mental wellness among residents of the Chequamegon Bay region. While it may be too late to participate this year, think about it for next year! We would love to have you.

Of course, next weekend the Birkebeiner ski race near Hayward, WI. While we are a bit of a hike away, if you’re not looking for participate, we have plenty of skiing and snowshoe trails up in our neck of the woods. There is more snow in the forecast and the temps are looking quite comfortable.

The sun is out today, and it’s actually quite difficult to be inside writing this blog post, when I’d much rather be outside enjoying the beauty of this winter day. So, we’re going to keep it short this time. We look so forward to seeing many of you as our late blossoming winter continues.

Bayfield and Chequamegon Bay Arts Scene – another winner

February 9th, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

The Bayfield and Chequamagon Bay arts scene is once again providing opportunity for great entertainment in the next two weeks. Stagenorth, a sweet community theater located in Washburn, WI, is opening tonight with a production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” We had the chance to attend their last dress rehersal last evening and were blown away.

The story is clearly a wrenching one, moving all of us to think deeply about human history. This production has successfully taken this emotional tale, woven in an incredible set (designed by our local buddy, Bob Holton), great local actors and fantastic production. Dress rehersals are always a bit rough – yes, that last chance to work out the kinks. But I was taken in immediately and felt a part of this small group of people struggling to survive intolerable circumstances.

Now I need to add a disclaimer. Our daughter, Kristen, is part of the cast. She plays Miep Gies, one of a small group that hid eight Jews from the Nazis for slightly more than two years, an act which could have cost her her life. And when the Gestapo finally discovered the eight, it was Meep who managed to preserve the writings of the youngest of the eight- Anne Frank. So clearly, I am biased.

For those visiting Pinehurst Inn and Bayfield in the next two weeks, consider this wonderful production. You’ll be glad you did.

Pinehurst Inn Happy to Support Bayfield Regional Conservancy

February 1st, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

In the December Pinehurst Inn Newsletter, Whispering Pines, it was announced that for every 2012 reservation made during the month of December, we would donate $10 to the Bayfield Regional Conservancy. We joyfully announce that during that month, we got 19 reservations for 2012 resulting in a $190 (actually we rounded it to $200) donation.

We are so pleased to support the great work of this land trust organization. BRC works with citizens, local government, private landowners, tribes and state and federal agencies to protect important habitats on Lake Superior, northwoods forests, inland lakes, rivers, wetlands, and farmland.  They have worked to protect some critical lands in our region including Mt. Ashwabay, Nourse Sugarbush, Frog Bay Tribal National Park to name a few. These are places that both locals and visitors can enjoy while knowing the land preservation is critical to the health of the land, the waters and forests.

A healthy environment is vital to healthy communities and nature inspires us and nourishes our soul.  We hope you will visit some of these specialplaces and consider the work and funds it takes to make this preservation happen.

Catered Dinner at Pinehurst Inn – just one ingredient in the Bayfield & Pinehurst mix

February 1st, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

This past weekend we had a wonderful group of guests traveling together. Long time friends, making the opportunity to come to Bayfield and Pinehurst Inn, enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed setting. This group was such fun and are a great example of maximizing the Pinehurst Inn and Bayfield experience.

Their activities were right in line with how to do Bayfield in the winter. Arrival at Pinehurst to order a pizza from Maggies and sit in the parlor by the fire talk, laughing and just kicking back. Saturday morning shopping. finding great opportunities to get to know Bayfield through the eyes of a couple of fun business owners. A Wolfsong Dog Sledding adventure that they will remember for a lifetime. And a catered dinner served by Molly Lewis Siegler where great food provided more opportunity to celebrate.

It isn’t about programming every minute. It’s about truly experiencing the place for what it has to offer. This group will remember the weekend for years to come. And they truly made connecting adventure, environment and personal rejuvenation their goal. All to the backdrop of Pinehurst Inn and this small community of Bayfield, Wisconsin. And as innkeepers, we watch this and it really makes our day. Thank you!

It maybe a quieter season, but there’s still plenty to do!

January 31st, 2012 by Nancy Sandstrom

It’s funny that many people assume that Bayfield closes its doors over the winter months. Even those of us who live here look forward to the quieter months. Yet, once those months arrive, our schedules stay full and there’s always something going on up here.  Ironically, the little things that drive people nuts during the summer months are the ones that don’t exist during the winter. You rarely need to search for a parking space. Almost never will you have to wait for a dinner at our local restaurants. It’s simply a quieter place.

That said, what is there to do? There are many different winter events worth checking out in Bayfield – such as the Blue Moon Ball, Apostle Islands Sled Dog Races, Bayfield Winter Festival and more! Beyond that though, check out our local shops. There are quite a few open year round and you’ll have the time and opportunity to chat with the owners. Better yet, if you’re staying at Pinehurst Inn, let us set up a catered meal for you or enjoy a wine tasting from Bayfield Wine & Spirits. Oh, yes – and there’s Enso Wellness Center and Day Spa ready to schedule your massage or facial. Ahhhhh.

I guess one of the harder things about the busier season here is that we don’t have the time that we would like to contribute to each and every visitor. We’d love to see you up here over the next couple of months.

Here’s to a happy and prosperous new year to you all!

There's something to say for tradtition

December 5th, 2011 by kristensandstrom

pinehurst carolers image Every year for as long as I can remember our family has made a tradition of decorating our home for the holidays together. As life goes on and schedules get busier that has become more and more challenging. We did find time last week to enjoy dinner together and decorate our “big” tree. The music was playing on Pandora (once upon a time it would have been John Denver & the Muppets on vinyl), and my almost 4 year old nephew assigned himself the job of delivering ornaments from the box to the adults for hanging on the tree. While the tree looked beautiful when we were complete, we still weren’t done. I had placed our Santa collection on the fireplace mantel, but there was still much work to be done. We still had the smaller tree to put up – we call that the Music Tree. And, our caroler collection was still packed in a crate. Yet, it was late and we were tired.

Yesterday, I noticed my mother had posted on Facebook that she was going to start decorating the Music Tree and get out the carolers. Alone. The pangs of guilt certainly hit me. I was tired and had been fighting off a nasty head cold for almost a week, but I didn’t like the idea of her doing things like that alone. These were a part of our family tradition. Okay, so I must confess that I didn’t run over to Pinehurst right away, but I did go. As I walked in the door, she said to me, “The carolers are ready to go out if you want to help.” I didn’t jump up and down or get as excited as I might have 20 years ago, but without question, I went to the landing and starting arranging. The music was once again playing (I think I may have even heard a muppet or two!). Placing each of these carolers in their appropriate space and laughing with my mom about their silly faces was a perfect moment. It was tradition.

While this is certainly a quieter season here at Pinehurst, we do love having guests at this time of year. There is something so warm and welcoming about this big old house when there is snow on the ground and a fire in the fireplace. If you haven’t been here at this time of year you are most certainly missing out. We really do love sharing our traditions with our guests and hearing about theirs.

We want to wish a very happy holiday season to you all, and hope that you enjoy sharing your family’s traditions as much as we do.
